Blue Light affects your nervous system more than you think and it is a contributing factor to major mental health disorders such as:
- Attention Deficit Disorders ( ADD )
- Cognitive impairment
- Sleep disturbances
- Anxiety
- Other
It also affects your retina and eye health and contributes to it’s deterioration. It raises cortisol levels, which contribute to a multitude of illnesses. Here is how it affects the Nervous System:
Specialized photoreceptors in the eye’s retina called ipRGCs contain a photopigment called melanopsin, which is highly sensitive to blue light. When exposed to blue light, ipRGCs send neural impulses along the retinohypothalamic tract directly to the hypothalamus in the center of your brain —the body’s master circadian pacemaker. This causes Melatonin Suppression, inhibiting the secretion of melatonin, the hormone that promotes sleep.
Simultaneously, daytime blue light stimulates alertness, elevates heart rate, and boosts cortisol production. This is catastrophic for the body in the long run. High Cortisol levels are responsible for many chronic illnesses, particularly those connected to the immune system.
